Our Japanese classes are suitable for:
- complete beginners who want to learn Japanese step by step;
- school and university students exploring Japanese language and culture;
- working professionals who communicate with Japanese clients, teams or companies;
- learners planning to study, work or live in Japan;
- candidates preparing for JLPT N5, N4, N3, N2 or N1;
- anime, manga and Japanese-culture enthusiasts who want structured instruction; and
- learners who need flexible weekday, weekend or personalised classes.
No prior knowledge is required for the beginner Japanese N5 course. If you have already studied Japanese, our team can help you identify a suitable starting level.
Japanese scripts
You will learn Hiragana and Katakana before gradually building your Kanji knowledge. Instead of treating each character as an isolated symbol, lessons connect scripts with pronunciation, vocabulary and meaningful sentences. You can also use our guide to Japanese scripts and vocabulary for additional practice.
Grammar and sentence formation
The course introduces Japanese word order, particles, verb forms, adjectives, question patterns and polite expressions in a planned sequence. As you progress, you learn to understand and create increasingly detailed sentences rather than memorising disconnected rules.
Speaking and pronunciation
Live classes provide opportunities to use greetings, introductions, questions and everyday expressions. Role plays and guided conversation practice help you apply new grammar and vocabulary in realistic situations.
Listening
Listening activities train you to recognise familiar words, sentence patterns and meaning at natural speeds appropriate to your level. This is important for both practical communication and JLPT preparation.
Reading and writing
You begin with short words and sentences, then progress towards notices, messages, dialogues and longer texts. Writing exercises help reinforce scripts, vocabulary, grammar and sentence construction.
Japanese culture and communication
Language changes according to context and relationships. Lessons can introduce relevant cultural points, greetings, etiquette and levels of politeness so that you understand not only what an expression means but also when it is appropriate.
Our online Japanese language course consists of live sessions with an instructor. Students can ask questions, participate in activities and receive guidance during class. This format is different from relying only on recorded videos or self-paced applications.
The learning process generally includes:
- instructor-led explanation of new language;
- guided examples and practice;
- speaking, listening, reading and writing activities;
- revision and doubt clarification;
- assignments or practice tasks; and
- periodic review of progress.
Students also receive the learning support listed for their selected course, which may include textbooks, workbooks, digital audio or video resources, practice material, class recordings and portal access. Confirm the exact inclusions for your chosen level and batch before enrolling.
Choose a group course if you prefer a fixed learning schedule, interaction with classmates and a more economical fee structure. Group classes can also provide useful pair work and shared speaking practice.
Choose one-to-one Japanese classes if you require personalised pacing, individual attention or a timetable built around specific availability. Customised lessons may also be more suitable for learners with a deadline or specialised professional goal.
One format is not automatically better than the other. The right choice depends on your schedule, budget, current level and reason for learning Japanese.
Many students join a Japanese course to prepare for the JLPT. The examination evaluates language knowledge, reading and listening; it does not contain a speaking test. For that reason, a balanced course should support examination preparation while also developing practical communication.
Our level-wise learning path helps students work towards the knowledge and comprehension expected at N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1. Exam readiness also depends on individual revision, practice-test performance and the time available before the examination.
Read our complete JLPT exam guide to understand the levels, format and preparation process. You can also compare different options in our guide to Japanese language certification.
Japanese can support several academic, professional and personal goals. It may be useful for people working in technology, engineering, automobiles, manufacturing, research, tourism, translation or international business. It can also help learners communicate more confidently while studying, working or travelling in Japan.
Language ability alone does not guarantee admission, employment or a visa. However, combining Japanese with your education and professional skills can strengthen your ability to communicate in Japan-related environments.
Some learners study Japanese for career or education plans, while others want to understand anime, manga, films, books and everyday culture in the original language. A structured course gives both groups a clearer progression than studying unrelated topics without a learning plan.
Indian Institute of Foreign Languages has provided foreign-language education since 2013 and has trained more than 25,000 learners. Our Japanese language classes are designed to give students a clear learning route, regular instructor interaction and support beyond individual class sessions.
Students can benefit from:
- live, interactive online classes;
- weekday and weekend batch choices;
- group and one-to-one learning options;
- structured progression from beginner to advanced levels;
- integrated grammar, vocabulary, Kanji and communication practice;
- study materials and revision support according to the selected course;
- portal access for learning-related information; and
- a free demo option before enrolment.

There is no single timeline for every learner. Your progress depends on your starting level, weekly class schedule, attendance, revision habits, exposure to Japanese and target proficiency.
A beginner can build a foundation through N5, but reaching intermediate or advanced Japanese requires continued study across multiple levels. Class hours should therefore be treated as guided instruction, not as the total amount of practice required to master a level.
For a more detailed explanation, read how long it takes to learn Japanese.
Use Japanese regularly between classes. A simple weekly routine can include:
- revising the lesson on the same day;
- practising Hiragana, Katakana or Kanji in short sessions;
- reviewing vocabulary in complete sentences;
- listening to level-appropriate Japanese;
- reading aloud to improve recognition and rhythm;
- completing assignments before the next class; and
- recording doubts to ask your instructor.
Free tools can be useful for extra practice, but they work best when they support a structured curriculum. Explore our collection of resources to learn Japanese for free alongside your instructor-led lessons.
Start with N5 if you are a complete beginner. If you already recognise the scripts, understand basic grammar or have completed a previous course, do not choose a level based only on how long you have studied. Ask for guidance so that your present skills can be considered.
Before enrolling, confirm:
- your learning goal;
- the appropriate level;
- group or one-to-one format;
- weekday or weekend schedule;
- course duration and current fee;
- material and portal inclusions; and
- the amount of weekly self-study expected.
